Bernie is The Whiskey Professor for Beam Global Spirits and Wine. Not only the best job title on the planet, but it translates to him talking about bourbon. A veteran comedian of 25 years he is entertaining, but he can also tell you more about bourbon than you ever thought you could know.
Bernie's draw toward bourbon is natural. His grandfather was one of 13 saloon keepers that started the Falls City Brewing Company in Louisville, KY back in 1905, and his father worked there for 45 years. "Before you make whiskey, you've got to make beer," Bernie says.
Throughout the year Lubbers spends time at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky where he spends time and learns first hand from Fred Noe himself, Beam's 7th Generation family Distiller.
Bernie is a master of reading bourbon labels. Reading labels? That's right. There are more to labels than a name. You can find out where a whiskey is made, it's age, proof, and much more. By knowing this, you can tell a lot about a whiskey/bourbon, before even taking a sip, or make that purchase.
Because of the new and fresh approach of teaching people how to read a label, entertaining/informative presentations, and leading people to recite the Bourbon Pledge that he wrote; Bernie was named Global Whiskey Ambassador of the Year, 2009 by Whisky Magazine at Whisky Live! in London, England.
Bourbon Whiskey - Our Native Spirit is Bernie's recently published book on bourbon, so it can truly be said that he "wrote the book on bourbon!" It's a great over view on the subject; how it's distilled and aged, why it was distilled and how it became aged in the first place. Along the way you'll discover bourbon's rich history and great stories that dove tail with the history of the U.S. itself. Of course, he also teaches you how to read a label, which is not only fascinating, but when put to use; invaluable.
